Effects Of Cheating In College

Cheating is just as prevalent in college as it is in high school, and some say these behaviors stem from behaviors developed in high school. “Cheating in college has been with us since the inception of higher education. In recent months, cases of cheating, including large-scale cheating at elite colleges, have led to considerable turmoil. Many of these behaviors could well start to take shape right at the level of high school. A survey conducted by renowned academic integrity researcher Don McCabe shows how widespread the problem is in high schools” (Loschiavo). When students receive bad grades, this only makes them want to try harder because they do not want to fail out and they feel a sense of remorse for receiving a bad grade. Recall the previous illustration concerning the student who received a good grade and how this made them feel good inside and made them want to try harder to get that feeling again. Well, the same works in the reverse situation. If a student receives a bad grade on an assignment, not only do they have the incentive to improve their work habits because they do not want to fail the class, but also they do not want to experience that feeling again. The school system’s major emphasis on receiving good grades ensures these actions. As a result, the emphasis on receiving good grades not only discourages students from getting bad grades, but it also helps the students develop a good work ethic. “Developing a good work ethic begins during the educational process. As you go to school for an education to further your career, you can build a good work ethic through your study habits” (“Strong Work Ethic”). When students get bad grades this makes them decide if they need to change something to improve. A majority of the time, the students decide to improve their work ethic which will help them for the rest of their lives.
