Babbage was forced to temporarily give up on building his projects (Charles Babbage). One of Charles Babbage’s inventions was the ophthalmoscope (Computer History). The ophthalmoscope is used to examine one’s retina during eye exams. Without this invention, doctors may not have been able to detect many visual disorders before they occurred. Mr. Babbage also “proposed 'black box' recorders for monitoring the conditions preceding railway catastrophes” (Computer History). This black box “measured the speed of the train and its degree of vibration” (History of Computers). This invention was the model for the black box on today’s planes. Charles Babbage has inspired other scientists and inventors. For example, many years after Mr. Babbage lost government funding for his inventions, a Swedish printer by the name of George Scheutz used Mr. Babbage’s designs for the Difference Engine to build a working model. The machine was able to print “mathematical, astronomical, and actuarial tables with unprecedented accuracy,” and it was even used by the British and American governments for many years (CBI). Over time, other scientists and inventors used Mr. Babbage’s designs to construct the first functioning computer. This led the way to having the high level of technology available to us
