Though in modern times many are opposing this form of discipline, even claiming it is abuse, corporal punishment is a very effective disciplinary action if used correctly. Corporal punishment in American schools has been a commonly practiced discipline tool since colonial times. Educational faculty, be it administrators or teachers, have been able to give a misbehaving student a spanking or a few licks with a ruler as a method of punishment (Phillips, 2012, p.12). Throughout the years the idea of corporal punishment in the American school system was fairly routine until the 1970s and the case of Ingraham v. Wright, in which the Supreme Court ruled that corporal punishment was legal where not forbidden on a state, district, or local level.…

Also, to get my student’s attention I say, “Show Me Hands and Eyes” and they follow by repeating “Hands and Eyes”. This is a great way to get them focused quickly during instruction. Every child in my classroom has a job.…

While I have a great deal of experience managing a large group of children, I have not had the opportunity to have my own class to develop my own sense of classroom management. I feel confident in my ability to control a class full of students, but I look forward to the opportunity to organize my own classroom and set classroom expectations. Since I have not had my own classroom, I feel there are many little things that happen in a classroom that I have not gotten to practice. There are procedures developed for everything students do in the classroom. I want to see my own growth in classroom management because classroom management can make or break a classroom.…

Wright that corporal punishment could not be considered “cruel and unusual punishment” as punishment in schools were not the same as criminal punishment (Ingraham v. Wright).
