In this text, I discuss the character of Claudius in the play, Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Based on the play, Claudius the King and Hamlet are the two main protagonists. In the play, Hamlet is out to avenge the death of his father, brother to King Claudius. In the play, Claudius killed the father of Hamlet, took the throne, and married Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. Thus, in this text, I discus the actions of Claudius, how they depict his character and role in the play. However, it is important to state that these are my thoughts about, Claudius based on how he handles the problems facing him and the throne. There is a problem in Denmark, but the current King is not ready to testify to the subjects that his marriage to Gertrude, the mother of Prince Hamlet, and the wife to King Hamlet. In this play, no one knows that to ascend to the throne, King Claudius who is now married to his sister-in-law killed his brother, the father of the villain in the play, Prince Hamlet. However, a ghost appearing to the soldiers in guard breaks the silence to let the young Hamlet and the soldiers know that their current King, Claudius is murderer who killed him, took his throne, and his wife, Gertrude, the mother of Prince Hamlet. As a result, Prince Hamlet must avenge the death of his father, and do it he must kill Claudius. It for the reason that the Ghost of the former King appears severally to the soldiers at the gate dressed in combat gear, if going to war. when speaking to the young Hamlet in the first act, the ghost reveals the degree of greed in Claudius by saying that the current king killed him, took the throne, and his wife Gertrude, the mother of Prince Hamlet. Even though, the young Hamlet had suspected this earlier, it now becomes clear that current king killed his brother, the father of prince Hamlet in order to rise to the throne as the king of the Danes. For this reason, Hamlet must avenge the death of his father by killing Claudius so as to appease the spirit of his father and let it lay in the spiritual world. Ideally, man audience differs with Claudius for killing his brother because of the royal seat of becoming the king of Denmark. Nonetheless, while power wrangles appear to be one of the key themes in the play, Shakespeare appears to tell the audience that power is one of man’s weakness, and that people can go miles even when it means committing atrocious crimes just to get themselves in power.
