Correlational Survey

Improved Essays
In this correlational study, a total of 600 undergraduate psychology students were initially surveyed from the University of Oregon. Using systematic sampling, we assigned a number to each participant and picked 220 students to use for our analysis. The first participant number was 2 and we picked the proceeding participants in intervals of 3. Picks went as follows 2, 5, 8, 11 etc., bringing us to a total of 220 participants.
A total of 220 random participants, 113 boys and 107 girls, from varying ethnic backgrounds (65% Caucasian, 16% Latin American, 4% African American, 10% Asian, and 5% Middle Eastern) and with ages ranging from 18-33 years old (M= 19.43, SD= 1.6) were used in this correlational study. The participants also all had to be

All students are required to be unpaid research participants for a total of four hours per term. By filling out our online survey they get to fulfill 30 minutes of their four-hour requirement in the comfort of there own home. Once registered with SONA, the participant would find our study, the competition and academic performance survey, and sign up for it.
Before they were allowed to take the survey’s, the participants had to fill out a confidentiality form. The confidentiality form told them that they could withdraw from the study at any point in time, and that their names would not be disclosed in the study. The confidentiality form also asked for the participants complete and undivided attention while taking the survey to control for confounding variables.
The confidentiality form also addressed all possible risks and rewards for participating. The risks that come with the study are essentially none, other than the 30-minute time commitment. The reward is that it fulfills a half an hour of the four hours required for intro to

These three factors are then assessed in relation to competition. See a more in-depth description in previous study.
The other survey was the Hypercompetitive Attitude scale, which is an assessment with questions centered around that idea that people are willing to win at all costs. An example question would be, “If you don’t get the better of others, will they get the better of you?”. Answers ranging from 1-5. See a more in-depth description in previous studies.
The survey orders were mixed up between participants, but all of the questions were the same for each participant.
A debriefing form was given to the participants proceeding the study which includes all details about the hypothesis of the study. A link to the head researchers email was given as well in case any additional questions need addressing.

Procedure:
By going directly through the Psychology department we were able to tell every intro to psychology student about our study. Because every student has a four credit hour requirement, the opportunity to take our survey was a good option. At the beginning of one class two researchers went into the class and told the students about the opportunity. If the student chose to participate in the study, they had to register on the SONA website and select our study, Competition and Academic

According to Bachman & Schutt (2014): Research should expose participants to no more than minimal risk of personal harm, researchers should fully disclose the purposes of their research, participation in research should be voluntary, and therefore subjects must give their informed consent to participate in the research, and confidentiality must be maintained for individual research participants unless it is voluntarily and explicitly waived. (p. 60) Although Dr. Coswalt protects the research participants from no more than a minimal risk of personal harm, the research scenario still violates three of these principles. Dr. Coswalt has failed to fully disclose the purpose of her research to the participants and their guardians. Dr. Coswalt and the participating schools mistakenly believed that the students and guardians should not be informed of the study, so that students would not change their behavior, a term known as the “Hawthorne effect” (Bachman & Schutt, 2014, p. 192).…

There were two groups that participated: college students and school children in the fourth and fifth grades. The first two studies looked at the two respective groups of participants; study one focused on the college students and study two focused on the school children. However, studies three and four focused more on the college students. In study three, the researchers had the participants answer questions about their current thoughts at certain points during the day, and in study four, the participants’ academic scores were observed, since they were all undergraduate students. In each study, the researchers measured the scores of the participants twice in order to determine whether there was a difference in their depression levels.…

Our conceptualization of, public stigma and personal stigma are derived from definitions described by Bathje and Pryor (2011), Golberstein, Eisenberg & Gollust (2008), and Reichert (2012). Public stigma is conceptualized as perceptions an individual has about external attitudes towards people with mental illness. Bathie and Pryor (2011) describe public stigma as a social construct composed of three parts, affective, cognitive, and behavioral reactions to people with mental illness. Examples of public stigma include the attribution of negative social narratives and negative stereotypes (Bathje & Pryor, 2011; Corrigan & Watson 2002). Personal stigma is conceptualized as internalized public stigma.…
