Research shows that couples receive substantial social support from friends due to lack of family support; same-sex couples report less conflict and more happiness in their relationships (Parker-Pope, 2013, p. 3). According to Parker-Pope (2013), fewer close family relationships and lower likelihood of having children allow for external factors such as family pressure, children and financial commitments to be less important in impacting happiness. Rittter (2014) contrasted this idea, stating that same-sex couples may experience “minority stress” as a result of living in negative social conditions from the family and society, and are often dealt with internally potentially causing relationship problems in the long term. Isolation from family may cause sexual minorities to turn to their partners as a survival mechanism, also having the potential to cause issues in the relationship (Ritter, 2014, p. 11). However, Riggle et al (2014) argued that same sex parents, on the other hand, report more meaning in life. Religion can reject the individual leading to complications in future relationships, or bring them closer together based on their interpretation of the religion. Though family support may not always be present, families of same-sex parents are extremely likely to be supportive and caring, impacting the relationship of the married couple positively. The legalization of same-sex marriage is a huge step in the changing the traditional family model, and with validation in society comes emotional benefits to same-sex relationships. Further studies should place a greater focus on the relationships of same-sex couples rather than just the discrimination and challenges they face. Further observation should also be placed on same-sex parent families, as more information about what society has not seen very often helps to eliminate prejudice.
