Censorship In Society

Ever since people have communicated, people have wanted to encourage some ideas, while suppressing others. This idea eventually became known as censorship, and was applied by groups of even minimal power all over the world. The merit of censorship has been argued from many different sides, for many different reasons. Much of what censorship is, in our modern world, is a strong group of people depriving others of knowledge, to further the first group 's goals. Although some censorship may be beneficial when it comes to taking maturity into consideration, it is a dangerous thing to contemplate. This can, at first consideration, seem to be a positive attribute of censorship. If we can protect our children, why would we not? Why should we not? Some may say we should keep children sheltered from the world around them to protect them from all of the negative influences, but this protection may actually be something that is hurting the children. Eventually, no matter how much censoring is done, children will come into contact with inappropriate, dangerous, or hurtful information. Knowing this, we should be able to see that our job is not to handle everyone of these problems for them, but to help them to learn how to handle them themselves. If a child is never allowed access to the internet, never allowed to learn about what they should and shouldn’t trust or listen to, they will have no idea how to handle a new situation. Many terrorist organisations in our modern world have begun flocking towards social media as a tool to recruit those too young or too misguided to understand what they are doing. The kind of children that communicate, and possibly work with, these organizations are not necessarily bad, just simply making the only decisions they can think to make. Whether these few represent the government, the “1%”, both, or some other group, control of the spread of information is too strong a power for any group to possess. Many countries around the world suppress free speech and restrict freedom of information to only a select few. These few people choose what the public is allowed to see, which severely changes and shapes their view of the world and their country. This can be seen vividly when looking at the “Democratic People’s Republic” of North Korea. This country, from an outside, informed, perspective shows itself to be a thinly veiled dictatorship, ruled by a despot with little to no consideration for the well being of his people. While we can see this, the majority of North Korean native citizens believe their “president” to be a benevolent, almost god-like figure. They are given little to no access to the internet and their only source of news is censored, edited, and redistributed by the tyrannical government. It is this spread of misinformation, caused by censorship, that leads to the people to be so deeply deprived of reality. Is this kind of government a favorable one?
