East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is a public institution located in Johnson City, Tennessee. It is among one of the well-known universities in Tennessee. It is a regional university and one of its ultimate goal as stated in the university’s vision statement is “to become the best regional university in the nation” (ETSU Vision, 2016). Cross cultural learning will expose students to information about their own culture, prejudices, and personalities. It will help the student to acquire more knowledge about their selves through learning about others. One way ETSU can effectively encourage cross cultural learning is to require all of the students in their freshman year to take a class on race, culture and diversity. Another way is that the ETSU administration should organize an open forum on topics related to race, diversity and culture. The second approach to consider is to work on improving diversity on campus. ETSU could improve diversity in terms of organizing multicultural events, recruiting more students and faculties from different race, and organizing an open forum talk for faculties and students to discuss about race and culture. It is important that the faculties (Professors, Deans, Chairman) attend this open forum because they are a big part of the institution and they can use their “referent power” to influence student’s perceptions on racism (Mitchell,
