It also predicts that the use of humor as a coping strategy is negatively correlated with self-defeating humor Meaning, for example, if an individual has a lower self-defeating humor score, the lower the usage of humor as a coping strategy.
However, the results of the present study do not support the idea of a negative correlation. Instead, there is a weak, but significant positive correlation between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy, rather than the negative correlation between the two measures. Based on these results, if an individual’s score on the HSQ is high for self-defeating humor, then they also have a high score for the use of humor as a coping strategy on the MSHS. By recording ethnicities and gender of the participants, the relationship between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy could differ between these categories. In the study conducted by Chen and Martin (2007), they had Chinese and Canadian participants complete the HSQ and the CHS. The results of their study showed that the two ethnicities had differing results. For example, they found that there was insignificant correlation between self-defeating humor and Self-enhancing humor among the Canadian female participants, while there was a significant positive correlation found in the Chinese female participants (Chen & Martin, 2007). Therefore, since there was differing correlations between the different ethnicities and genders, this study could further explore those

One of Robin William’s most memorable quotes comes from the movie “The World’s Greatest Dad” when he tells a talk show audience that “Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. " We find it ironic that Williams, who has made the world laugh, saw no other way of solving his own problems and most sadly, took his own life this week. Williams, one of the most respected and talented actors of our time was well known for his humorous and inspiring roles such as a woman in Mrs. Doubt fire, a therapist in Good Will Hunting and a radio DJ in Good Morning Vietnam. It is a strange parallel that in his personal life he had been suffering from long term depression, alcohol and substance abuse since the 1960’s. In this rather skewed light, we may well ask ourselves, “Is laughter really the best medicine”?…

Terror Management Theory and Self-Esteem: Effects on Psychopathology Terror Management Theory The terror management theory posits that people build character and culture to shield themselves from the potential for anxiety caused by the awareness of their mortality (Greenberg & Arndt, 2012). Humans fear death, and from that fear, “the urge for immortality becomes an underlying role in human behavior and their social psychology” (Greenberg & Arndt, 2012, p. 401). There are two notable features that humans have that yield to mortal terror: first, being a high degree of self-awareness and second, being the capacity to think in terms of past, present, and future (Greenberg & Arndt, 2012; Schimel, Landau & Hayes, 2008).
