Introduction
“First of all, let’s recognize that the word ‘poison’ has no meaning , since, in medicine, the most violent poisons become health-giving remedies when they are used properly” (Dumas, Alexandre). An anesthesiologist is a physician who is trained in anesthesia and uses it to block out the pain of a patient. Anesthesiology deals with the management of patients under anesthesia, the support of life functions of patients under anesthesia, and the management of problems in pain relief (“Anesthesiology”). Originally anesthesiology wasn’t considered a specialized field of medicine. Instead, it was used in the operating room where the surgeon was in command. To become an anesthesiologist one must complete at least four years of undergraduate school, four years of medical school, and then three to seven years in an internship or residency programs (“Bureau of Labor Statistics”). Their duties are to take a patient’s medical history, update charts and patient information, order tests for nurses or other healthcare staff to perform, review test results to identify anything abnormal, recommend and design a treatment, and address concerns and answer questions that patient’s have. Anesthesiologists work with other physicians and surgeons to decide on treatments and procedures before, during, and after a procedure (“Anesthesiologist”). An anesthesiologist helps patients by limiting the amount of pain a they feel as much as possible. They do this with the help of modern day anesthetics. I believe that this career would be a good one for me because medicine and the medical field have always intrigued me. Also it is because I feel I would be able to perform the tasks of an
