HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY PLAN SUMMARY
In my research paper, I will be focusing on a family member who is diabetic and overweight. He is thirty years of age, nearly 300 pounds, has poor dietary habits and has been told by his doctor that he can die at a young age if he does not take care of this chronic disease and his weight issue as well. He has been diagnosed with type II diabetes and the condition has been worsened by his continued use of consuming foods and drinks that has a high sugary content. He is at a higher risk of developing major organ failure, loss of limb, coronary failure and even loss of vision. These are all related to his diabetes not being managed and controlled. By working on his weight loss gradually, it will positively contribute to an overall health improvement as well. I would achieve this by consulting with a dietician as he never had the benefit of using previously. As mentioned, this will be done in small steps that so he does not feel under pressure from anyone. I would also, accompany him for walks outdoors, climbing stairs. Certainly small stages of getting active again as opposed to a full blown exercise program as he has not worked out in over twenty years. These interventions are designed to be habit forming in the long run since most people, whether diabetic or not do not stick to strict diets and exercise throughout their lives. I want to make it fun for him, while at the same time improving his health one step at a time. His doctor has him on insulin but he does not take it since he has a fear of self-injecting himself daily. I would recommend to his doctor to reconsider his regimen of insulin to an inhaled type or even oral meds, so he can get back on the daily regimen of taking medications. I fully understand that exercise carries cardiovascular risk for someone who has not exercised in a very long time and the plan can have repercussions in terms of increase strain on his heart and lungs, also he gets dehydrated very fast and this can lead to …show more content…
I do believe so as weight-loss is an important goal for overweight or obese persons, particularly those with type 2 diabetes. The added benefit of regular physical activity will help maintain weight-loss and prevent regain of any poundage loss. Furthermore, there is minimal cost as there is no gym membership involved. We will be going outdoors to exercise. Also, he can see a dietician through his medical insurance. Cost of food will shift to high fiber foods and lots of water as opposed to sodas. The healthcare community can take a few ideas from my plan for it is designed to be low cost, not demanding of the patient as far as a drastic change in lifestyle is concerned. My intent is to have it benefit the individual for the long term as part of their daily habit without making a chore or burden to them. This is when the majority of folks either give up or get frustrated and that leads to their diabetes getting out of control due to lack of
