Vital Qualities Response Can’t we all just get along? The phrase may be a little cliché’ but what a question for the century. In our lives we must get along and play nice with others. There are those people who make that chore difficult and still others who are very easy with which to be compatible. Wright (1989) explains there are three significant qualities each person must practice when working to get along with others and have a positive experience. These qualities are genuineness, love, and empathy. Israel Lazo (2014) states that we have t a choice to make enemies or friends, creating distance from people or learning to get along. We must remember that each person is different and the greatest quality working forward is learning to understand those differences to form a complementary alliance (Kornhaber, 2012). Genuineness is a characteristic that is simply you being you. This is not siding with another in an effort to win points or to appear on their side. A genuine person is not fake. Love is a most intimate and personal term defined according to individual. We must take time to learn what others perceive as love. One cannot have a deep personal relationship without love. A few typical characteristics of love are safety and security, support, sense of belonging, care, and acceptance (Wright, 1989). This love is an accepting love, one that does not judge. It is one, however, that loves “in spite of” a person’s faults or shortcomings (Lazo, 2014). I grew up in a home that did not say ‘I love you” at every turn. Did this mean we were not loved?
