First, I would tell a parent that it is not okay for a child to lie because they could develop a lying habit at an early age which may carry on into adulthood. According to the lesson notes, children learn at an early age that lying is never acceptable and they could be punished for told lies. However, children become accustomed to telling lies when they hear what they perceive as a lie from the adults around them. For example, a father may lie to his significant other about a broken picture frame in front of his child. This will make your child resent you due to the excessive pressure that you are applying. As a parent you should trust that you have instill the “right” values such as honesty into your child. Instead, as a parent you should let your child revise their story if you suspect that they are lying to you. Children just like adults are not perfect therefore you should allow them to make mistakes and correct said mistakes. Finally, according to the lesson notes, it is entirely possible to increase truth-telling in children by praising them when they tell the truth. This is called positive reinforcement because as a parent you are increasing the chances that the positive action occurs again when you reward your child (PWCD, 2013).
Moreover, I found using the storytelling approach to increase truth-telling in children to be very interesting. The researchers at Sage Publications found that focusing on the “positive consequences of honesty” was more effective than the “negative consequences of dishonesty”. The researchers used “Pinocchio” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” to represent negative consequences dishonesty and “George Washington and the Cherry Tree” to represent “positive consequences of honesty” (Lee et al., 2014).
