Curriculum mapping within a professional learning community is a procedure for collecting and documenting what is taught in the classrooms. The focus on mapping is on units, content, skills, strategies, assessments, and resources that can be used to improve student learning and performance. According to Perkins interview with Jacobs, the key to curriculum mapping is that colleagues can share electronic data immediately so that everyone knows what is being taught in other classrooms today, last year, and in the future (2003). Vdellhofen states that PLC’s help reduce working in isolation and helps teachers know what good teaching looks like (2011). Understanding how something is taught helps create better informed teachers and a higher level of achievement.

There are many steps in the process of creating and implementing a curriculum. The first is to understand the required standards. Mooney states that books, articles, and websites can be useful when reviewing standards and learning goals (2008). Educators can not plan learning goals without being familiar with what it is we want students to be able to do. Also, Mooney adds that, the focus should be “from what to how” we will teach the standards (2008).

The second step in curriculum mapping, according to Mooney, is to look at data in the district (2008). Educators need to look at test data, student strengths and weaknesses, and surveys to find out the needs of the district. Test data can help educators find out what the students know or don’t know. Also, surveys can help get the opinions of students, parents, and educators so that everyone is informed of strengths and weaknesses that are real or perceived. Jacobs states that reviewing data helps find gaps and repetitions quickly so that they can be resolved (2004).
