According to Bronfenbrenner's ecological models, development is affected by a number of systems within the environment with the child being the center. The model recognizes five ecological systems. They are the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem and chronosystem (Boyd & Bee, 2012). These interactions with either will help or hurt the child’s development, which is why this model is important to understand. Microsystem implies the immediate environment of a person. These surroundings include an individual’s neighbors, classmates, teachers, peers, and family. These are things they contact daily usually. If a child is rejected by people in the microsystems, they are more likely to have difficulties in having positive relationships with people they come in contact with later. Exosystem relates to relationship between a social environment in which a person does play an active role and his immediate context. A child’s or a wife’s experience at home can be affected by the fathers or husbands experiences at workplace. The father can get a job promotion, which requires him to travel a lot, and this can generate conflict with his wife and the interaction patterns with the child. Another way it can affect the home life if the husband is having a hard time at work and comes home in a bad mood because of it. I have experienced this at one point in time. Macrosystem defines the culture where the people live. Culture refers to people’s ways. Cultural settings can comprise of ethnicity, poverty and social economic status. Others are not able to at home due to economic reasons resorting them to choosing childcare. Today, non-parental care is showing to be a great alternative for many parents who require time from home in order to attend school or go to work. I support a center based childcare because it gives the child to interact with other children of their age and communicating with other children is so important when the child is young. Children who are around other children their age can learn and grow from one another. Children who are not socialized in the early years of their development will grow up lack skills to meet new faces and develop friendship and will tend to be shy unlike children who socialized during their tender ages (Bojczyk, Shriner & Shriner, 2012). Apart from offering socialization, center-based care also offers healthy snacks and meals to children. In addition, when it is meal time, it is conducted in a family style to allow them to learn about independence and serve themselves meals. Caregivers in center-based care are professionals with more specialized training compared to home-based ones, most centers require some type of degree to even work there. Finally, ensure that you interview your prospective caregiver and it is always, in my opinion, good to do a background check and ask people in the community about
