In 2012 alone nearly 24 percent of Americans had more than one tattoo (Body Modification & Body Image." Bradley University). But when it comes to Body modifications many Americans think of just tattoos, piercings, etc. but the complete definition of a body modification is anything that changes the natural appearance of the body, so tanning, dieting, plastic surgery, even brushing of the teeth all count as body mods (Body Modification & Body Image." Bradley University). So what deems a body mod as acceptable? Simple. It’s society. Look at Victorian England with the fashion of corseting- even though the binding of the rib cage is extremely unhealthy, it was still found beautiful by individuals because society deemed it beautiful, even today this trend is seemingly still around, although modified many women use a waist trainer in order to thin the waist area (Body Modification through a Sociologist 's Eyes). Another trend that existed like this was in feudal japan with the practice of foot binding, where a young woman’s feet would be broken and bent then wrapped tightly for months until she could fit a near size 2 shoe (Yuan, Anthony, Dr. Body Modification or Mutilation)! Is this just blatant sexism or stupidity of society (Body Modification through a Sociologist 's Eyes). Humanity needs to learn that our bodies and our culture only matter to us, so what we do should only be for us, and not forced upon …show more content…

Society is an idea created to keep people in line from obtaining true freedom of who they are, so this idea must be disbanded for society to move forward and lead humanity to a brilliant new

There is a famous saying by unknown author that says, “sometimes the nicest people you meet are covered in tattoos and sometimes the most judgmental people you meet go to church on Sundays,” this quote helps to examine how looks doesn’t matter but action does. Having tattoos shouldn’t be considered against social norms and value because tattoo should be looked as freedom of speech or of expression. In Ronald P. White’s article “The Art, the First Amendment and the Courts” helps demonstrates how tattoos and the art of tattooing are forms of pure expression fully protected by the 1st Amendment which helps protects freedom of speech. People get tattoos to tell one’s story to the world through a visual representation of an important moment, person…

However, there are others who heed the warnings and stay away from the fiery furnaces. Many studies have been done on the dangers of tanning beds, and almost everyone is aware that the Center for Disease Control has linked them to skin cancers including melanoma (which is the deadliest type), basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma (Indoor Tanning).…

Invasive surgeries always require healing time and generate operative risks and possible postoperative infections or other complications. The new wave of cosmetic treatments uses injectables to enlarge, enhance and reshape breasts. One of the most popular augmentation techniques involves using liposuction to remove fat from one part of the body and injecting the fat into breasts. The technique includes adding stem cells collected from the patient 's own blood, which helps to assimilate the fat as a viable part of the breast.…
