Register to read the introduction… I say that because I am a Middle Class family who can’t afford a lot of presents our children ask for, but when they are on sell at outrageous deals they become more of a reality. University of Cincinnati economist Michael Jones says the average Ohioans will spend about $750 on holiday shopping. This can make for a tone of Christmas present that may have not of happen without Black Friday deals. This spending does not only benefit the people receiving these wonderful gifts but it also helps our economy. The National Economic Counsel & The Counsel of Economic Advisers stated “Consumer spending makes up roughly 70 percent of the American economy, as measured by Gross Domestic Product. Last year, consumers spent around $50 billion on Black Friday Weekend alone. The retail industry employs 15 million Americans, and has been responsible for 9 percent of total employment growth in the 40 months since the recession ended in June 2009”. When massive spending happens like Black Friday that means more money for retailers, which means they can pay employees and they can pay their suppliers, which in turn means their suppliers can pay employees and down the line. Then all those employees have enough money to spend, which keeps the economy humming. More demand, more profit, more jobs, more income to create more demand and so on. However, there are many incidents reported of injuries from black Friday frenzy. What is it that Ohio is doing that possibly other states are not? It is the organization that they have developed or the, safety issue they overcome. Could it be the 24 hour locations they have, so there is no line to get into the store? Maybe all employees are more aware of what is going on. One of the most talked about stores that have so many Black Friday incidents is Wal-Mart. On the Detroit Free Press posted that states like North Carolina, Central Florida, Colorado, California, Los Angela’s, Michigan all reported brutal incidents on black Friday in Wal-Mart. So what is it that Ohio does that is so different? Ken Galla, the store manager of Kohl’s in Mentor, located at 9581 Mentor Ave., said he has never experienced any dangerous incidents with customers, even during the busy holiday shopping season. He thinks the dangerous events are few and far between, but they just garner the most publicity. Kohl’s supplied employees with food to help them keep up with the busy schedule.
