The sport known as badminton has its origins in ancient civilisations in Europe and Asia. The ancient game was known as battledore (bat or paddle). Shuttlecock was probably originated more than 2000 years ago in the 1600s, where it was just two people hitting a shuttlecock back and forth without it hitting the ground. In 1934, the International Badminton Federation was formed, with the initial countries, which included England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France. Badminton was introduced to the Commonwealth Games in 1966 which consisted of five disciplines which were, singles (men, women), doubles (men, women) and mixed. Biomechanics help to improve your performance in badminton as it studies how your body moves and what you can do to improve your technique of a badminton smash shot. In badminton the smash is the most aggressive and forward attacking shot that one can utilise to gain a point or increase the games speed to put the opposition under pressure. This is because if you hit the shuttlecock meaning for a smash shot but are at the wrong height it could either go back court like a clear shot or hit the net because you have hit it with downward motion to low causing it not to make the net. The angle is another factor to consider as it can drastically affect the flight path of the shuttlecock because if you hit the shuttlecock at the wrong angle it can go anywhere from straight down to straight up without you understanding what happened. To effectively play badminton and win points and put the opposition under pressure, the angle to hit the shuttlecock at matters to succeed in badminton. In badminton you use speed to produce your smash shot. With the misuse of speed you can lose a point very easily as you need to be able to hit the shuttlecock and create a fast speed to be able to put the opponent off guard.
