His mother was an opera singer and his father had abandoned them a year after Chaplin was born. However his father was a singer too. His mother, Hannah Chaplin, was a talented singer, actress and pianist. During one of her shows her voice cracked which was the end of her career. Years later she had come down with a fatal illness which had caused her to be put into a mental institution. His mother was forced to put her son in an orphanage, he was in school for only 4 years, meaning he had no idea how to behave (Outman 77). His mother was released a few years later, after showing no signs of the illness, however, it quickly struck back and that was the end of his mother.
