Over the past decades, palm oil has been the driving force in the world of edible oil and fats; it is also endowed with good technical attributes and economic advantage as one of the most produced and consumed oil (Ugwu, 2009). This product is gotten from an economic tree crop called Oil Palm (Elaeis guineensis) that is indigenous to West Africa (Verheye, 2010; World Growth 2011). The crop is a perennial crop that is of great importance to man because of the varieties of raw produces gotten from its different parts (Embrandiri, Singh, Ibrahim and Ramdi, 2011; Ofosu-Budu and Sarpong, 2013). These different parts of Oil Palm include the palm fruits, palm leaves, trunk and roots (Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), 2011). The palm …show more content…
The primary usage of palm oil is in food products and such include: from being the main ingredient in cooking oil and margarine, they are also found in ice creams, confectionery, in ready-to-eat meals, baby food, and others. On the other hand, the non-edible usage includes: soap manufacturing, production of useful oleo chemical as used in emulsifier in food processing and pharmaceutical industries, production of toiletries, paints. A recent development linked to the rising prices of fossil fuels and its environmental concerns is making palm oil as a feedstock for agro-diesel or biodiesel. Global estimates put 80 % of palm oil’s total use in food products, 15 % in personal care products, and 5 % in agro-diesel. In addition, the other commercial products gotten after the palm oil from the processing of FFB, includes: Crude Palm Kernel Oil (CPKO) and palm kernel cake (PKC). Where the CKPO is used also for the production of other industrial by-products, the PKC is used for compounding feed for livestock (Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), 2004; Corley & Tinker, 2007; World Growth 2011; Alufohai and Ahmadu, 2012; Emokaro and Ugbekile, 2014, Global Palm Oil Conference (GPOC),
