Each of the three standards presented has good goals that would be valuable for students to learn. I am selecting the Common Core State Standards as the “best available”. My selection of this set of standards is based on the fact that my district expects our students to meet these standards; they are the ones that the teachers are accountable to teach. These standards are good standards. Since that is the case, I embrace this set of standards as a professional. The Common Core standards have been designed and developed through many drafts and much feedback. They “represent s synthesis of the best elements of standards-related work in all states and other countries to date.” (The Standards, 2012) The Common Core Standards incorporate both skill and content and provide consistent sequential guidelines detailing what every student should know and be able to do in both math and English language arts in grades K-12. How these skills and content are taught to students is left up to the educator. The Common Core Standards are benchmarked and this allows growth to be assessed and measured from year to year for each student. Many standards in the English language arts require students to evaluate and think critically what they are reading in both informational and literary text. Doing research, understanding the research, and then presenting the findings are also expected. …show more content…
I like the linear approach. It is easy to follow step by step to use information to solve problems, make decisions and synthesize and present the information acquired. Using the six step process, students do the following: 1. Identify what the problem, question, task or goal is that they want to meet and determine what information they will need. 2. They look at the sources for needed information and select the best sources to use. 3. The next task is to locate those sources and find the needed information. 4. They study the information to determine what is valuable. 5. They organize that information and present it in some way. 6. Finally, they evaluate their learning and the presentation thus allowing them to learn from the entire experience. This step by step model allows students successful learning experiences
