It was the most challenging part of reading this book with David’s sense of hopelessness and that he kept blaming his sons addiction on his lack of action and custody battles he dealt with as a child. Whilst reading Beautiful Boy, I was intrigued to list all warning signs, both small and large, that would end up leading Nic to a dark place. Hearing David have to admit that he knew the point in which he started to loose his son and come to terms with it was hard to comprehend. Also I became frustrated when David thought a way to bond and have his son accept him was to smoke a joint with him after continuously criticizing himself for leading Nic to drugs. Once high school graduation has passed, mood and behavior swings were added to my list of trigger signs. The strangely comforting aspect to this way that David and Karen were not clueless to his peculiar actions and knew that some kind of drug was driving Nic’s outburst
