In 2010, I was a promising young professional leading public relations and marketing campaigns for clean technology companies. My career was thriving: I worked alongside the brightest minds in Silicon Valley, at a leading venture capital firm. The firm had recently doubled down investments in the clean technology sector and the solar, electric vehicle, biofuel and lighting technologies we invested in were poised to disrupt incumbent industries. My colleagues and I believed that these technologies would positively impact the world we live in by preserving natural resources and minimizing our environmental impact. The experience was incredible and provided me the opportunity to make a great living while working in a sector greater than myself, in something that I believed would change the world.
In reflecting on my career trajectory, I realize that my greatest career satisfaction comes from working with organizations and causes that work to bring positive change to the world. Along with the Silicon Valley experience, I experienced tremendous growth through my roles with the

In 2011, I married an active duty special operations soldier who at the time had committed 12+ years of his life to the U.S. Army. Through our union, I became immersed in the everyday life of a community comprised of individuals who are selfless, generous, passionate and at times physically and emotionally broken from the stress of a country at war for nearly 15 years. The military community has experienced many good, better, and not so good experiences that have shaped their perspectives. These personal stories are seldom shared beyond the figurative walls of this community and which have further contributed increasing the military-civilian

Notable examples of this are innovators like Steve Jobs or Larry Page. They did not just build tech empires otherwise they would be as memorable as the people who built the first papermills. Instead, their products meaningfully impacted and continue to impact the lives of people everyday. Hence, I decided that in order to achieve personal success, I would need to do something of magnitude and meaning that probably improved the everyday lives of everyday…

“Welcome to Look Me in the Eye and my Aspergian world” says John Elder Robison. I spontaneously giggled imagining a circus ringleader bowing before a crowded tent. I had a feeling that I was about to go on a magical journey and Mr. Robison was my Willy Wonka or the “Cat in the Hat”. The author did not disappoint.…

Growing up in the military, allows me to personally witness this positive growth in character through myself and through my fellow military brats; moreover, it allows me to witness the false view on us military brats and how those negative views personally affect the way military children view themselves. Many people look at military families with sympathy and look down on the children who experience the challenges that the life-style brings; however, very few people look at these kids with admiration and see their strength. Through the constant moving, deployments, and supportive community, military children demonstrate to other kids around them that they are not just military brats who are "broken," but that they have positive characteristics that come from being in the military. Viewing these positive characteristics in the military children allows them to view themselves in a more positive…

I am just a normal person who is lucky enough to receive the wonderful opportunity of a formal education in America. Despite my family’s lack of English language skills and the limitations of my family’s resources, I have been able to navigate myself through the American educational system. With hard work, many hours of studying and dedication to school, I have found success in high school in just four years of speaking English. However, my hard work is not over yet.…

I was inspired to identify my career goals from my recent exposure to the business world and the most powerful women in finance. My takeaway from my internship last summer at Solera Capital, a women-run private equity firm, is that I would like to integrate social responsibility into every aspect of my life. I had an amazing experience at Solera because I found that their commitment to diversity, integrity, mentorship, collaboration, environmental responsibility and sustainability greatly contributed to their success in managing portfolio companies geared toward serving and providing products to women, families, and diverse demographics. These are high growth sectors that, I believe, would be best managed by someone like me. Over the summer, when I attended a…

I grew up in a family that was always there for each other. I am used to the support, love, and encouragement that I received from my family and friends. It would only help me become a more successful person if I were to increase my support group. An organization like the NSCS can assist me in making important associations with other high achieving students or mentors. It's critical to find the opportunity to converse with somebody who has effectively experienced what you have; especially in college where everything is different from high school.…
