Analysing Essay Deconstruction The quality, format, and use of communication conventions determines the effectiveness of a formal literary essay. In the essay Studying Literature in Grade 12, by Mrs. Phillips, the text demonstrates an example of a improper persuasive essay. This is shown through the content, incorrect language conventions, MLA citation and plagiarism, as well as the essay structure. Without these details one cannot achieve an effective essay. Mrs. Phillips does not provide proper content when she states “the need to promote and establish our own writers, and the need to encourage younger Canadian authors” (Phillips 1). This is significant because Mrs. Phillips does not justify this point in the body paragraphs. This affects the thesis and content which inferefers with the reader 's …show more content…
Phillips fails to properly apply language conventions throughout the essay. Mrs. Phillips shows this when she says “Because we need to become more familiar with our literature” (Phillips 1). This demonstrates incorrect use of language conventions since personal pronouns are present such as, “we” and “our”. In formal writing personal pronouns are not acceptable, one should avoid the use of personal pronouns when writing an objective piece to keep the writing formal. In addition, the author uses incorrect language convention. Mrs. Phillips shows this in her writing when she says “ Three reasons for this are; the need to focus on our own Canadian culture despite being surrounded by other cultures, the need to promote and establish our own writers, and the need to encourage younger Canadian authors” (Phillips 1). The use of a semi colon is to join together two clauses whereas one commonly uses the colon to introduce a list of items. In the text the author uses the incorrect colon resulting in an incorrect sentence. This is why it is important to use language conventions properly to achieve a grammatically correct
