Playing sports has always been my passion, I love everything about it. But one thing has always stood in my way; my size. I’ve never been the tallest person in a crowd and most of the time I am one of the shortest people in the room. I never imagined that this could hold me back from something that I love so much and could possibly make my dreams of playing collegiate softball unreachable. I first began playing softball at only five years old.…

As soon as my dad could put a glove on my hand the learning process began and after my first practice I fell in love with the game. From that point on all I did was softball, it was my safe place, my other home and the one thing I knew I could do something great in. I would always want to just throw with my dad or my brother, as little as I was I wanted to show them that I could catch the hard balls they threw. Of course though, I couldn’t but I was in the process of getting there.…

Sixty miles per hour is the speed at which the average softball player throws the ball; so I guess you could say I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I believe I was exactly where I was supposed to be. You know how some people say there was a certain moment that changed their life completely? Well, this was that moment for me, and it all was caused by a miscommunication. Miscommunications happen all of the time, but with a softball that isn't actually soft, and someone standing only 30 feet away from you; well you can already see the implications. At the time, I didn't see what was going to unfold, but I had a bad feeling about what was to come.…

“Nice swing,” hollers Jeremy, my softball coach, as he places another ball into the pitching machine (6). He puts the ball in the machine and I take a vigorous swing. The ball flies with power straight over my coaches head.…

Baseball and softball seem to be much alike, but they are much different. Starting off with the pitching distance of the two. In baseball a pitcher stands on top of a mound and aims at a downward angle. The pitcher has to put more motion and velocity into his throw because he is 60 feet away from the plate rather the 40 feet as it is in softball.…

“Although many people assume that softball was derived from baseball, the sport’s first game actually came about because of a football game” (History 1). Softball was invented on Thanksgiving day in 1887 in Chicago, Illinois by a group of Yale and Harvard alumni. They were all just sitting around waiting for the outcome of the Yale vs. Harvard football game, when one of the alumni threw a boxer's glove at a harvard supporter. The supporter swung at the glove and everyone was interested by the act of the stick hitting the glove. George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, yelled out, “Play Ball”, and the first softball game began.…

“You play ball like a girl!” this famous quote from The Sandlot shows how baseball and softball players are always arguing which sport is harder than the other and the difference between the two sports. Even though both are nearly identical in some ways, each sport has gear, popularity, and field they play on, that have an importance that makes each sport what it is and separates the two. Gear in baseball is one of the most needed items, if not the most needed. In baseball you need cleats for gripping the dirt and grass.…

Several people often misconceive softball as being an effortless, female dominated sport that requires little to no skill. Some say that softball is just a sport in which you hit the ball and run through bases trying not to get out. People who have never played softball, let alone any other sport, will say that softball is made easier for females. Before I began to play softball, I too speculated that softball was one of the most basic sports there was. Speaking from experience, softball is quite challenging and tiresome.…
