Register to read the introduction… • Reading peoples body language such as facial expression, eye contact, posture (which is the way people sit or stand) for example: sitting with crossed arms can mean, “I am feeling defensive.” Leaning can mean a person is bored or relaxed and leaning forward in a chair can mean the person is showing interest in what is being said.
• Using gestures with your arms and hands for example shrugging of the shoulders shows a person that you are saying “I do not know.” Putting your thumb in the air usually means “Success” or okay and a raised hand palm facing outwards means “Stop.”

Physical disabilities can have different effects on communication. For example a person who has suffered a stroke will not only have difficulty in forming and speaking words, they can also suffer an inability to understand and to express meaning through words. This is because of loss of movement and difficulty in using facial muscles to form words.

• Make sure there is sufficient time put aside to communicate properly, without disturbance or outside disturbances.

• Because everyone is an individual the communication cycle can easily get blocked if professional listening skills are not used.

If I told an Irish or Scottish joke to a person from the Midlands they would probably find it amusing. However telling the same joke in Scotland or Ireland may cause offence. This is differing humour. We have to be aware of what we say to individuals in our work environment, so as not to offend them. We also have to be aware of culture differences.

• Undermining individual’s self-esteem and confidence.
• Not respecting individual’s culture, values and beliefs.
