Cleopatra 's brother Ptolemy XIII, seeking to gain Caesar 's respect and favor, sent men to assassinate and behead Pompey. When Caesar was presented with the head of Ptolemy, however, Caesar was instead enraged by this action and took control of Egypt. It was during this time that Cleopatra displayed her seductive charm by placing herself inside of a carpet to be given to Caesar. Cleopatra 's plan to gain Caesar 's favor worked without a hitch and she was given the backing of Caesar in her case for the throne. This backing was even further established nine month later as Cleopatra gave birth to Ptolemy XV Caesar, also known as Caesarian (Little Caesar). Caesar 's backing of Cleopatra led to the Battle of the Nile where Caesar defeated Ptolemy 's fleet, leading to Ptolemy XIII 's drowning. This relationship with Caesar landed Cleopatra the throne of Egypt and the favor of one of the strongest men in history, but was sadly short lived. This dispute include much propaganda flung at each other that favored Octavian since many people though that Antony had not done a satisfactory job punishing the murderers of Caesar. Antony eventually learns of Octavian 's attempt to have him killed. After reconciliation between the two and a combined victory over Brutus and Cassius, the two agreed to split the empire between the two where Antony gained the eastern half that included Egypt. Cleopatra saw this as a perfect opportunity to once again seal herself into the Roman empire. When asked to meet him in Tarsus, Cleopatra arrived adorning the guise of Aphrodite to win over the affection of Antony. Cleopatra would continue to emphasize her power and divine connection by comparing herself with Aphrodite and Isis, the model mother and wife. This beautiful power along with the beauty and charm of Cleopatra won over the affection of Antony, leading to a romantic as well as political relationship between the two. After years of conflict between Octavian and Antony that culminated in Antony leaving Octavian 's sister in marriage, Octavian convinced the Roman senate to declare war against Antony.
