In the course of Counseling in Audiology I class, I discovered several valuable concepts that are essential to my development as a counselor and as a professional. Additionally, my duties as a health care provider involve several counseling services including building adult relationships, pediatric counseling considerations, mental health considerations, and multicultural considerations. During my progression in becoming an effective counselor the areas I decided to discuss were 1) what is not counseling in audiology, 2) strategies to effective reasoning, 3) how to have a difficult conversation, and 4) resilience.

Nonetheless, declining the patient was not an option. Furthermore, after taking a deep breath I was ready to speak slowly and with a calm voice. I communicated to the patient about records in her chart depicting the numerous times she arrived late to her appointments. I asked her “what is going on in your life that is causing you arrive late to our appointments”. She mentioned that she has trouble with transportation and has to take a bus from the inner city of Baltimore to the clinic. She indicated that sometimes the bus was late and other times she lost track of time. At that moment I was able to identify the source of her frustration. Now I was in the position to identified possible courses of action. I explained to the patient how important it is address her concerns and see if it was possible to schedule another appointment. As I implemented calming strategies I was able to ask questions to make an attempt to understand why the patient was late. I learned that it is essential to identify their identities and ask questions about their experiences. That way I can better understand their culture and we can both find common ground. Then, we mutually agreed on how to address being late in the future. I explained to her if there is a possibility she would be late to call and notify the front desk. For instance, late patients interrupt that clinic’s schedule and impact the amount of time professionals have arranged with …show more content…
A couple of years ago I received an email in regards to my application to the Towson University Audiology Doctorate program. I opened the email with excitement knowing there was a possibility I was about to begin my career in audiology. The email had stated I was on the wait-list and that I should weigh my options carefully because there is the possibility I would not be accepted. My biggest fear was about to become my reality. The fear of my dream of becoming an audiologist being rejected. That was a time in my life where things did not go right. I felt that my options for a career in audiology were limited and my dream was not possible. It was extremely difficult wake up every morning and be unsure of what the meaning of my life was. The voice inside my head constantly told me that I was not good enough. At that moment, I had to take full responsibility for my life. Where did I find the resiliency to overcome this adversity? When my sister was born the doctors diagnosed her with down syndrome. They explained to my parents that there was nothing they could do and provided them an opportunity to give her up for adoption. They said she was not capable of becoming a successful member of society because of her disability. Not only did she survive the situation life had dealt her she thrived. Before starting on this artifact, I was not comfortable with the counseling standards. They seemed obscure and subjective at best. I had no idea that counselors have definitive guidelines with substantial training on how to accommodate each concept to each situation. It is quite daunting to imagine that there is a well-established standard of procedures and protocols that are flexible and successful in addressing each individual need. By compiling the information for this comprehensive notebook, I have a whole new appreciation for the many resources that are available to me that will allow a successful beginning to my new adventure as a school counselor.…

This time gave me an opportunity to undertake reflective listening through active listening which according to Rogers (1975) in his “client-centered” therapy argues that it encourages the client to share the information in more depth than if I was only asking directive questions. This enabled me to gain information when the client brought out the underlying issues including those that I had not thought about. The active listening also improved my relationship with the client since I was able to express acceptance by avoiding any expression of disagreement or judgement thus making him open up and also trust me as his couselor. This method also left me with enough time to explore and diagnose the issue thus noting the new ways of approach to the…

Since beginning the course and having begun to learn the skills required to achieve Rogers’s six conditions, I have become more self-aware and more honest and open in my communication, as well as more emotional. I have seen evidence of the same with my fellow students. The theory of person centred counselling and the six conditions is greatly enabled by our group practice sessions.…
