The career that I chose to research is Athletic Administration. Athletic Administration is a field that I believe I can excel. Because I have a passion for the sport and I am an African-American woman, I think that I would be an asset to the profession. This profession is typically dominated by white males. Nonetheless, I think it is a career which I could flourish. I would like an opportunity to pursue a career in athletic administration because of the many possible job opportunities in this particular field. In fact, I found that only 9.4 percent of athletic directors are women. I also found that only 14 percent are African-Americans. (www.sportbusinessdaily.com). so for someone like me it can be a challenge to become an athletic director. As far as salary and job requirements, it basically depends on the level and experience of the athletic director. For example, the salary for an average high school athletic director is from $50- $75,000 according to (www.salarygenius.com). Also found in the same article that the average salary for a collegiate athletic director is about $515,000 a year. The job requirement also varies according to the level. According to the text, the athletic director is responsible for the administration of the athletic program. At the high school level, the athletic director may be employed as a teacher and coach in small schools. In large schools, he or she may not have teaching responsibilities. Finally, the compare a budget and allocate spending on items. The AD decides the coaches’ salary, the team travel budget, equipment purchases, and facility upkeep. As far as advancement in the profession in the field of athletic director, one may work up the ranks of high school. For example, a 3A successful athletic director may be eventually hired as a 5A athletic director. Also, a larger high school AD may eventually work his way to a college as an assistant athletic director. Also, there are professional organizations that high school coaches and college coaches can join. The organizations are: Texas High School Coaches Association, Texas High School Athletic Director Association, and The National Association of College Director of Athletics. In conclusion I would love to be an athletic director. According to research I only need a Bachelors for a high school AD job and a Maters for a collegiate. I understand that I start with 2 strikes being an African American woman, but I believe in myself. The profession allows for growth and an opportunity to join a professional organization.
