College Athletes

Compensation for College Athletes Sports now a days are being put in the limelight for problems that have been arising with the organizations involved in sports. Especially with the athletes associated with the sport. People see athletes as overpaid, glorified men, but what they do is intense and a lot of hard work. They need to go through intense training and most athletes had to start playing and perfecting the sport at a young age. What they do might seem like a dream job and easy, but what they had to do to get there was anything but easy. The sports now a days have become more rough and strenuous on the athletes. In an article by Cambio and Kivirist, Kivirist states, “Athletes need time to train, practice, travel, and compete.”(Cambio & Kivirist, par. 5). Athletes have to take time to practice and compete for competitions. This is exactly what the professional do and yet they are not treated as a professional athlete. They are treated like they are still those young kids training and wishing to become the next big athlete. They are a big athlete now. They have been picked and trained to play for their university of choice. They train just as hard as any other professional athlete and yet are not treated like one. The only difference between the professionals and college athletes is that college athletes have to also balance being a student with their job as a athlete. They should at least be given some incentive to continue their hard work. College athlete have to work harder than regular professional and yet they don’t get any compensation for what they do and mentally have to cope with. Kivirist also states, “Plus, an injury in college can affect an athlete’s future.”(Cambio & Kivirist, par.5). College athletes face the same risks as professionals. If they get injured it could end their career as an athlete and all that work they spent training was all for nothing. They have more to lose than the professionals. Most athletes start at a young age and sustaining a career ending injury will do a lot to that athlete physically and mentally. Getting a good payment or worker’s compensation should help lessen the blow of losing all that hard work they put into their job as a athlete.
