Aspartame was discovered by James Shatter. He is a chemist at G.D Searle, which where he accidently discovered aspartame. Aspartame is a substance that is 180 times sweeter than sugar, yet it has no calories. Of spring 1967, Searle begins to run safety test for aspartame which is necessary for FDA approval. By fall, a biochemist named Dr.Harold at the University of Wisconsin does an aspartame test on infant monkeys. Without informing the Searle company first. The test results were negative. Out of seven monkeys, one dies and the other six dies from seizures. December 18, 1970 the Searle Company lays out a food and safety strategy for aspartame. January 1977, FDA immediately calls the attorney for an investigation. Wondering it should find Searle guilty of false accusations of misleading of information of aspartame. This is the first time the FDA had to do a criminal investigation on manufacturers. Later in July, Samuel Skinner decides to leave the U.S. attorney’s office to take a job with Searle’s law firm. December 1977, attorney Skinner stalls the grand jury for very long time that they decided to drop the charges. June 1, 1979 the FDA established a public board of Inquiry to make a decision on the safety issue of aspartame. September 1980, PBOI concludes aspartame should not be approved until further investigations of brain tumor in animals. January 1981, Donald Rumsfeld, ceo of Searle claims in a sales meeting he us going to make a huge push so that aspartame is approved by one year. October 1982, FDA announces that Searle filled a petition that aspartame is accepted to be a sweetener in beverages and liquids. July 1983-Novenber 1987, aspartame has caused more problems than expected. The sugar is greatly watched until this day.
