There had never been any reason why I would wish for a second, just one second, to be anything else. Now I saw that in the society that Pecola lived in, wanting to be white and have blue eyes wasn’t that improbable. I now began to do research and I saw the plight of African Americans in modern day society. I now saw the importance of being in touch with my culture for it is the only way to prevent what happened to Pecola from happening to any other African American girl. Some part of me wished I hadn’t picked up that book, wished I didn’t know the truth. Now I realize that this is what art is supposed to do to you. Art doesn’t provide an insight into life because who is to say that the artist is more enlightened than the audience. All he/she does is put the idea out there and leaves the rest for our mind to puzzle out. It is the nature of the artist to use his work to raise the right questions as it is human nature to always seek answers. For different individuals the question might be different because art elicits different emotions and interpretations from different people.
