Black men and women have been faced with stereotypes in magazines. The media portrays African-Americans to be more entertainers or athletes. “Black men and women have been stereotyped as unskilled labourers, athletes, entertainers, exotic foreigners, in traditional roles of ‘Mammy’ or ‘matriarch’, or as inferior or subservient to White authority figures.” Black men and women are only being portrayed as athletes or entertainers. On television, Black women have been professed as loud, while white women have a habit to be well mannered. The media portray women to be more submissive or as a sex object. “In addition to being stereotyped as submissive, women’s sexuality has been used extensively in magazine advertisements to sell products.” Fashion magazines have their models to show more of their body or caress an object to sell their products. The reason behind having women show more of their skin in these images helps sells the product to the public. These magazines give their readers an unrealistic idea of what is beautiful in their society and many women attempt to achieve this absurd form of beauty. Fashion magazines also affect African-American women in many ways like giving them the impression that their body type ideal for their society which leads to body dissatisfaction. Alongside this, African-Americans are being constantly reminded of African-American stereotypes, which are that they are mainly good for being athletes or different types of entertainers.
