Big Daddy’s big spiel to Brick during the second act is mainly about why he drinks. Brick drinks because Skipper is gone and he loved Skipper. While Big Daddy wants to give the plantation to Brick, but Big Daddy does not want to give it to Brick if he is going to drink his inheritance away. On the other hand, Big Daddy does not want to give the plantation over to Gooper, his first born son and Mae because he despises them and their children. There is no will written out to anyone since Big Daddy can not decide and believes that he is not going to die. The fact that there is no will, worries Gooper, a corporate lawyer. “I will now give you this outline my partner, Tom Bullitt, an’ me have drawn up-- a sort of dummy-- trusteeship” (159). Gooper wrote out an outline for a Big Daddy’s will to insure that he gets some of the plantation. Big Mama states that there should be no talk about wills or testaments because Big Daddy is not going to die. Brick would not be an alcoholic if he liked Maggie, and then Big Daddy would not have troubles making his will. Brick drinks because of his loss of his good friend, Skipper, since he could not admit his love for Skipper. Brick’s alcoholism is slowly killing him. Maggie really would like a child so she can inherit Big Daddy’s 28,000 acre plantation, but Brick does not like her because of his longing of the loss of Skipper. Big Daddy can not decide who to give the plantation to, so he chooses to not write a will. He dislikes Mae and Gooper but does not want to give it to Brick since he is alcoholic. Brick drinks because of Skipper’s death. Skipper was his someone special and Brick caused his death because he would not admit to his sexuality. If Brick liked Maggie instead of Skipper, Big Daddy would have no troubles choosing who to hand the plantation over to. Brick’s homosexuality helps to evoke the conflicts from within Cat on a Hot Tin
