Many researchers study the adverse outcomes following substance use in young adolescents with co-occurring mood and anxiety disorders, but what are the outcomes in older adolescents and young adults that are currently attending youth drug treatment services? In a study by Lubman, Allen, Rogers, Cementon, and Bonomo, conducted between 2004 and 2005, young people were interviewed about their drug use, psychopathology, risk-taking behaviors, and quality of life. The researchers attempted to find whether youth with depressive and anxiety disorders had higher levels of psychological dependence and display a greater level of poly drug use. What is PTSD?
A post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be present in individuals who got into situations that are so traumatizing it is impossible for them to cope and to function in their daily lives. It is a delayed or protracted response to this stressful event and is comprised of various psychological and psychosomatic symptoms (Lewinsohn, Gotlib, Lewinsohn, Seeley, & Allen, 1998).
A strong trauma is a fear-producing event that a person experiences, sees, or hears, which is life threatening or may cause physical damage, and therefore, presents an extraordinary threat of catastrophic extend. It would cause deep distress in almost anyone. The event can be unique or it can be a repeated event. Through this event, the person often feels intense fear or helplessness. Also it creates a discrepancy between the threatening factors in the situation and the individual coping strategies, which are associated with feelings of helplessness. This burden, which is generated by the trauma, thereby, can affect all spheres of life of an individual, including his or her mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
