Process Paper What is an Ant Farm? An Ant Farm is known as a project to study an ant colony and the behavior each ant carries. There are many ways to start one of these colonies and many ways to maintain them. This could be a really cool science project or even a type of “pet” to have. The first thing you need is a formicarium, which is a type of transparent box thin enough to study the ants and for the ants to make their tunnels. You need three types of dirt which are soil, loam, and sand. The last thing you need is of course the most important, which is the ants but also remember not to mix different species of ants. Also you must never mix ants from a different colony because each ant carries a distinct scent and if an ant carries one that does not pertain to the rest of the ants is automatically considered an enemy. In order to get ants for your ant farm you are encouraged to set out attractive foods and follow them to their nest in order to capture them. These ants always use the same route when they are foraging food and taking it back to their nest because of a type of chemical they leave behind which is called pheromone. A queen ant is a key factor because if there is no queen the worker ants won’t be able to lay eggs, so in order to find a queen you must dig out the

The first way is the traditional sand filled farm that you order and they give you a bag of a sand be sure to bake the dirt in the oven for about 10 minutes to kill any bacteria it may carry and then you simply pour it into the formicarium. The other type of ant farm is the gel type. This type of ant farm was created by NASA as an experiment to see if these itty bitty creatures could survive zero gravity. But the way these are set up is different compared to the sand with these is that they are filled with space-age gel. It may take your ants a while to adjust before they figure out they can eat the

This would lead to a problem because worker ants are not as capable fighters as soldier ants, leading to a weaker colony. This is evident during the phase where Z and Weaver “switched places”, and Z went out to battle. During the battle, Z was hiding while all the other soldier ants were battling away (at ¼ of the movie). The Queen’s Society guarantees that every ant is assigned a proper job, which results in a very strong colony. This is shown throughout the entire movie as worker ants were always digging, and soldier ants were ready for battle.…

After reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma CH 8-10 by Michael Pollan, I am shocked by Salatin’s grass farming system, which follows the ecological balance by his intelligent ideas. In Salatin’s farming system, they make animals process the manure, and the animals cannot only absorb the nutrition from the manure, but also it provides the natural nitrogen to the soils which contributes to the soils a lot. The Polyface farm is the original ecology farm, which is not rely on the chemical synthesis and the cheap corn. Comparing to the Feedlot chapter, the Polyface farm seems so much clean and the air is so fresh because they slaughter the animals by hand and there is no wall in the slaughterhouse so that they can utilize the sunshine to kill the virus.…

Michael Pollan article refers to his experience on the Polyfarm and its complex way of operating. Pollan never really stats that factory farms should be abolished but he does make an argument for why Polyface farm is more logically and sustainable. Pollon discuses the differences between factory farming and Polyface farming in logic. Factory farming is production of a single animal or crop better know as monoculture (Pollon, 377). When there is a chicken factory farm it can only produce chickens.…

“If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarians,” said Paul McCarthy. Fifty-six billion animals are brutally tortured and killed every day globally. To break that down, 3,000 animals are killed in factory farms every second, without including sea life. It is only morally right and natural for a human to not eat his fellow animals. Factory farming is done to produce the greatest amount of meat at the lowest cost, always at the expense of the animals.…

She taught them basic skills that will help them in the long run for their future advances. However, naturally people do not need to be guided, individuals know how to better the community because they will collaborate in order to aid one another, as shown with the ant colonies. The ants subconsciously knew they needed to take care of the queen ant because she was the thriving force of the society. Farmers have been leaders in food for centuries. Without the production of agriculture, people would have ceased to exist. The food that farmers produce is heavily based on the geographical area they occupy. For example, farmers in Asia produce rice, farmers in South America produce coffee, and farmers in Idaho produce potatoes. Farming and agriculture brought man out of the age of hunting and gathering, and allowed civilizations to flourish because they no longer had to move around constantly and gather berries and fruits.…
