For example, our HR team have recently been involved in the creation of a new School induction pack, issued to new employees to provide clear and insightful support when new staff join us from outside the University. A new exit survey has been drafted, to be issued to all staff who have resigned from the University, so that we can obtain useful feedback from their experiences of working at the School. Our primary aim is to ensure that our School is a place where staff feel happy, supported and listened to, from their first contact at interview, to the final day of their appointment.
While payroll takes care of compensating our employees, our HR department is responsible for employee relations: which although linked to the payroll function, is a distinct role that is crucial to the success of our School. The five-year plan set out in the action plan for this award will certainly colour many of the policy and procedure decisions made by the School over the coming years. One of the most vital roles that HR can play in supporting line managers in this endeavour is to provide a robust and methodical recruitment process. Our HR department is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of job descriptions, supporting the process of selection, interview and offer of employment (including the process of obtaining /transferring visas) while simultaneously valuing the differences between candidates and keeping in mind the positive benefits of employing a diverse range of talented staff. Ensuring that discrimination and stereotyping do not play a part in this process is all part of being seen as a fair and progressive workplace by both staff and
