The Declaration of Independence; It is the United States most prized possession. It’s almost completely inked by Thomas Jefferson and it occurred during the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment had many impacts on a variety of cultures and especially the United States. It made people question the way we live and the morals we follow. This is why the Declaration came about. The Declaration questioned every aspect of Government and asserted many issues such as equality, freedom, and the right to happiness. At the time the Declaration of Independence was written, most cultures were facing religious persecution. America wanted to be different; they wanted to grant the rights of religious freedom to their people. This idea of religious freedom was something every culture wanted. Most cultures envied the fact that America was one of the first to step up and take such a huge step. The Declaration asserts this issue by using enlightenment principles. Some would say that the Declaration is referring to only Christianity since the document used “God,” however most know that not to be true. The Declaration was referring to God in a way that most could interpret to be a Creator; that way anyone could practice the religion they choose. This still relates to today’s society because there are many different religions. Although America is known for Christianity, we do not suffer from any religious persecution like some countries still do. And in some cases, when others are questioned on their religion, they often refer to the sacred Declaration to clarify that they are not in the wrong for practicing their chosen
