Psychologists conduct many studies to recognize the new ways in which people think, and to ultimately find what makes people feel certain emotions. Results of these studies surprisingly show that feeling other emotions such as anger, fear or sadness could be better for people in the long run. Sad feelings can be linked to a better quality of life over the constant emotion of happiness in humans. Happiness is known to prevent countless "psychological illnesses, including depression, anxiety and borderline personality disorder." ( David 124 ) Doctor Susan David suggests that it might be dangerous to feel too happy. "If you're totally satisfied with your life and how things are going in the world, you don't feel very motivated to work for change." ( Diener 456 ) For instance, if someone does not feel comfortable in their own skin and it is negatively affecting their selfesteem, they might decide to go to the gym more often or find someone to talk to. This satisfaction that people get from the work they put in is what gives off pure happiness. Happiness cannot just come on its own. It truly must be worked for over time and sad feelings are needed in the path to a happier life. In "The Pursuit of Happiness", Begley states that along with the focus on one's motivations, it is also smart to participate in helping others. Through these actions, people can experience true happiness because serving others brings a great deal of gratification to people.
