The book Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing by Ted Conover illustrates the real conditions within the country correctional facilities that are mainly entrusted with the correcting and rehabilitating the individuals found capable of various crimes. The author depicts the correctional guards as inherently sadistic and uses excess authority in stamping their presence in the facilities. The Newjack gives a detailed report of all the activities that takes place in the correctional facilities. Due to this factor, one does not need to be a rocket engineer in determining the tense atmosphere that is created by the racial composition within the facility. The location of the facility is in the suburbs of the New York and this makes it easy to house a black Americans who are charged with crimes committed around their neighborhood. The racial discrimination that is experienced by black Americans at the hands of the white people is brutal, and the end results lead to death. Different researchers have indicated that the rate of deaths of inmates at the facilities across the United States is increasing day after day, and it is attributed to racial discrimination. Conover main agenda for enrolling to become a guard is to paint a clear picture of what happens in behind the bars. The author can present the issue of racial discrimination in this facility, and he even says that the guards refer the black Americans as niggers. The equipment is dilapidated as well as few compared to the constantly increasing number of inmates who are convicted daily by the justice system. The description paints a negative picture to the reader who has never had the opportunity to visit the facility. The facility is also understaffed since the number of trained personnel turnover is high compared to the other facility across the country. The experienced staff members are constantly transferred to other places, and this creates a crisis within the institution. When new guards are assigned to the correctional facility, they are inducted to the workplace by their colleagues who themselves have only spent only a few days in the institution, and this leaves many pitfalls in enforcing the policies of the facility. The majority of the guards do not have the idea of the protocol to fall should there be a crisis within the Sing Sing correctional facility and due to this aspect, the officers are supposed to use their judgmental skills to handle the situation.
