In 1910, S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker started their business Black and Decker. Six years later they introduced the first portable power tool and the company has been growing and changing the world ever since (Stanley Black & Decker, Inc., 2011a). In 1990, Black & Decker acquired the Emhart Corporation that included locks and lock set products (Cummings & Worley, 2009). With the introduction of this new product and Black & Decker’s desire to improve their global market, Fred Grunewald worked to develop an intervention to restructure the organization. Factors that favor or hinder Black & Decker globalization The globalization of Black & Decker and the new lock products has the potential to greatly increase Black & Decker’s global presence and increase their productivity. However, the old Emhart organization had six brand names that operated autonomous of each other. Emhart’s strategic orientation was multinational which required little to no global integration since they handled their own marketing, production, and shipment in the different regions. However, this structure resulted in numerous products and duplication of efforts without the same consistent results in different regions. The new structure would consolidate and reduce duplication and provide a consistent standard product. Therefore, Grunewald’s new structure has to deal with the internal issues as well as the external environment. Internally, he must obtain buy in from the existing employees that the new structure will be better for these employees and the organization. This can be challenging since they were very autonomous before and may be resistant to giving that up. In addition, while consolidating processes and products, they still have to be mindful of the different issues and needs of the different geographic areas. However, they have a structure in place with the power tools product line that has been successful and can help them work through the some of the issues for the lock product lines.
