Now, physicians could provide care for the needs of athletes in a more comprehensive way. On the path to making sports medicine its own division in the medical category, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine was developed. The AMSSM filled a void that didn’t have a name until it was designated as sports medicine. Since their establishing in 1991, their goal has been to provide a forum to foster professional relationships among sports medicine professionals that would allow advances in the field.
