When Poe first started writing, his favorite genre was poetry (The Poetry Foundation). This shows Poe’s great dedication and persistence. It’s in fact amazing that Poe continued his career when he was getting such a dull outcome for all of his hard work. For example, Poe was only paid nine dollars for the publication of one of his most famous works, “The Raven.” Poe then married his cousin but was heartbroken again when she died. His dedication definitely paid off though because he also became one of the first American authors of the 19th century who became more popular in Europe than in America. Poe proved that although being an author is a very tough career, it’s definitely not impossible. It just takes a lot of work. Poe is given credit for creating the genre of detective stories and for paving the way for depressing and dark themed literature. Poe set himself apart from most authors which is one of the biggest reasons why he was able to become so well known.
