As mention above, reporter’s essential role is to provide masses with information, therefore people’s voice should be decisive whether journalists are, as Woodward and Bernstein, crusaders or betrayers of truth, as Jayson Blair or Rupert Murdoch. In fact, public opinion about media representative is unfavourable. In 2009 38% of people taking part in the survey declared that journalists contribute a lot to the society’s well-being, but in 2013 numbers went down and this time only 28% agreed with this statement. Furthermore, in the very same year 27% claimed that reporters actually do not contribute to the society at all (Pew Research Center 2013). The film comes from 70’s, thus it raises a question whether it is still applicable. Taking every argument into consideration it is almost impossible to agree that portrayal of journalists as crusaders is true. Nonetheless, media industry is so complex and there are different personalities, therefore no one can make a generalisation about journalists’ roles. Many argue that the media are going through their golden age, however there is a strong opposition supported with significant arguments. Journalists rely on news agencies, they lost interest in investigating and watchdogging governments. Moreover, although media outlets has guaranteed freedom in democratic states, it is clear to see that some papers or TV network support certain political groups, thus subjectivity affects them. In addition, concentration of ownership has drastically risen since 1980’s which creates a threat to diversity, majority ofmedia are owned by minorities. Lastly, what matters the most is public opinion, considering that it is people who are a ‘target’ of media output, and they are very sceptical about journalistic profession. The public distrust and do not respect the way media operate. All in all, Woodward and Bernstein are great role models for young and aspiring journalists, nevertheless they are not commonly seen
