While the usage of digital platforms and social media can carry significant risks for its users, a person’s life or his upbringing without these trends would certainly be put at a disadvantage in today’s internet saturated world. Digital platforms and social media provide its users an easy access to unimaginable amount of knowledge. To further elucidate this issue, these recent trends can shrink space through time, creating a world in which people can accomplish normally time-consuming tasks within a tap away of their keyboards. The shrinking of space through time can be defined as making the world feel smaller than it is actually, as people can now take care of their usually time-consuming tasks within seconds (Gasher et al. 6). For one, digital platforms and social media essentially act as an extension to human communication, allowing individuals to interact with each other in real-time across long distances or meet new people: “In the same vein e-mail and social media facilitate the building and maintaining of social relations or online interaction with people that users have never met physically” (Pénard qtd. in Lissitsa 198). The use of social networks allows an individual to further deepen his or her friendship with another person, as they are able to communicate with each other in real-time, despite circumstances such as time issues that may sometimes get in the way. Digital platforms and social media allow an individual to have a conversation with his or her friends at any time, not to mention the fact that he or she can build a stronger network. These tools can greatly help a person with his or her general well-being. For one, when observing the economic state of the world in the present day, the competition for jobs in the market is at an all-time high. The appropriate use of these recent trends, however, allows for individuals to effectively search for job opportunities and increase their chance of securing them. In fact, one of the most efficient ways of finding and securing a job is to actively participate in social networks where the majority of job opportunities are concentrated in: “More than one-fifth of all jobs in the U.S. are posted to all three leading social networking sites, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook…” (“Social Media and Jobs” 28). Digital platforms and social media can provide an individual with job opportunities that would otherwise not exist for people who do not use these trends. With more than 20% of all jobs in The United States being on three social networking sites, an individual’s professional life would be much more inhibited if he chose not to indulge in these trends than someone who did.
