The shrinking of space through time can be defined as making the world feel smaller than it is actually, as people can now take care of their usually time-consuming tasks within seconds (Gasher et al. 6). For one, digital platforms and social media essentially act as an extension to human communication, allowing individuals to interact with each other in real-time across long distances or meet new people: “In the same vein e-mail and social media facilitate the building and maintaining of social relations or online interaction with people that users have never met physically” (Pénard qtd. in Lissitsa 198). The use of social networks allows an individual to further deepen his or her friendship with another person, as they are able to communicate with each other in real-time, despite circumstances such as time issues that may sometimes get in the way. For one, when observing the economic state of the world in the present day, the competition for jobs in the market is at an all-time high. The appropriate use of these recent trends, however, allows for individuals to effectively search for job opportunities and increase their chance of securing them. In fact, one of the most efficient ways of finding and securing a job is to actively participate in social networks where the majority of job opportunities are concentrated in: “More than one-fifth of all jobs in the U.S. are posted to all three leading social networking sites, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook…” (“Social Media and Jobs” 28). Digital platforms and social media can provide an individual with job opportunities that would otherwise not exist for people who do not use these trends.
