Lee’s media bias is the most important aspect of his argument because the portrayal causes young adults to perceive the elderly in a way that does not match up with the viewer’s reality (Lee, 2007). By making the elderly correlate with legal services and health, the media bias influences young adult viewers to believe that when they themselves turn into the elderly, they will only focus on their health, finances, and legal services (Lee, 2007). The idea of temporal distortion is very important because it allows young adults to be in a sense of denial about their future-selves (Jonson, 2013). I find it interesting because these young adults cannot comprehend themselves being similar to current elders. I do believe that technological advancement will positively affect the living standard for future elderly people, but this denial of the properties accompanying aging is not justified. By accepting the idea that young adults will be better-off in their older years than current elders, young adults are creating a rift between themselves and their elders (Jonson, 2013). By creating this rift, young adults cannot take the perspective of their elders, so they cannot properly attend to/care for them (Jonson, 2013). This dysfunctional thinking will further the rift between young adults and elders, thereby increasing ageist behavior. By removing the temporal distortion and making young adults understand the reality of aging and time, ageist behavior can be reduced.
