The philosopher Michel Foucault once described discourse as “Systems of thoughts composed of ideas, attitudes, and courses of action, beliefs and practices that systematically construct the subjects and the worlds of which they speak.” As masterfully presented by Foucault, discourse involves language and how individuals in certain communities, or “worlds” use language to communicate with each other. In part, language creates distinct discourse communities involving those who share similarities and are able to communicate those similarities as a result. In my multimodal project I aim to explore and compare the discourse community of professional athletes and the discourse communities of sports fans.

There are dozens of languages on this planet for the purpose of millions or even billions of people to be able to communicate with each other. Even within one language there are different dialects and sects which help to make communication with in one certain group even more efficient. In English for example there are thousands of different words just within the English language. However, because the English language is so diverse and carries thousands of different ways on how to express ideas how it is used, is up to the transgression of the speaker. All the examples whether in written or is spoken word used English as a tool. Yet each specific example contained certain lexicons within the English language to communicate shared values. In part, that’s what discourse communities do, they manipulate a shared language such as English to form a distinct form of communication. With my own project I am to show how athletes like Peyton Manning use common English words such as “ice cream” and “Omaha” and change their meaning by turning them into a team specific lexicon. I also argue that the use of signals and stickers serve as lexicons as well because they personify into a shared code to promote collective ideas as a team. In terms of fans, they use team specific lexicons and jargon to promote fan support. I try to demonstrate that by providing team specific cheers that individual fan bases create their own common subset of English for themselves. It is these group specific lexicons that are created to assist in the success of sports teams. In game, these lexicons and forms of language are applied during games to help the team using them to create strategy for winning. In the stands and on paper fans use lexicons to support their team which gives players motivation to play better. Either way both communities communicate in order to achieve success and
