Mass Production
Mass production is the process of producing and manufacturing goods and parts in large quantities at minimal expense; it is used for parts and products that are in high demand to make it the most worthwhile manufacturing technique. To achieve this high rate of production CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines are used this allows the quality of the product to remain at its optimum due to the high tolerances and precision of said machines and reduces the need for highly skilled workers as the machines perform the most skillful manufacturing processes. Each process in the manufacture of the product is done to the entirety of said batch before it moves on to the next process. Setting up a batch production process is usually cheaper than that of a mass production or continuous process so has lower capital cost and in addition is highly efficient and useful when only a required number of product are needed as only that number need be produced reducing waste, leading to lower raw material expenses and thus higher profit, It is also substantially more flexible than other manufacturing techniques as it can be easily changed to accommodate for customized orders such as a change in colour. Batch is especially useful when the product being manufactured is highly dependent on the season or changes depending on the season as the machines can be easily changed to accommodate for changes in design and so only one system is needed, this especially efficient when the batch production system is couple with cellular manufacturing. There are, however, several drawbacks to utilizing a batch production system, firstly when a change in design occurs there is a period of time while the machines and system is getting reconfigured when now products are being produced (cycle time) and workers are not working, this reduces profit ad resources are being wasted. Just in time ensures continuous improvement to the current manufacturing process; this is achieved by creating a system to identify the source of problems easily and when found mistake proofing this flaw preventing this problem from arising again, improving quality. Another factor is orientating the layout of the production to fully optimize time taken to manufacture the product by making sure as little time as possible is spent transporting the products from one area to another between processes. Continuous improvement can be made by continually trying to simplify tools and machinery so little can fail reducing the time in which nothing is being produced when machines are broken.
