Idioms And Slang Idioms?

Idioms and Slang vocabulary are different. An idiom is a figurative expression or phrase used to express an idea vaguely, so it does not relate directly to the person you are speaking to (Real Life Blog, 2015). Idioms are simply a group of words which have a different meaning than the sum of their parts. An idiom is a combination of words that has a meaning that is different from the meanings of the individual words themselves. It is a phrase which does not always follow the normal rules of meaning and grammar. (Lingualy, 2015). A good example of this would be, "You can't have your cake and eat it too." This idiom is saying that in some situations in life, you cannot have it both ways. On the other side, Slang vocabulary is informal street language words (Lingualy, 2015). Slang vocabulary is the words you will not find in a dictionary because most of the time they are created through different cultural groups. People make up new Slang s every day (Real Life Blog, 2015).

If students study English for a job, they especially need to learn how to understand and use idiomatic expressions so they can communicate with their co-workers, supervisors, or customers (Really-Learn-English, 2015). To sum up, idioms should not be ignored in vocabulary studies (Decarrico,2001:294). Accordingly, students in the Tourist Guidance Department at the Faculty of Tourism and Hotels need to learn idioms so they can communicate with tourists when they become tourist guides in their future

Looking at the list of phrases, I can identify two of the most offensive phrases to me, but I am adding the third: Did we __________? (insert whatever – pay the power bill, buy milk, take something out for dinner). This phrase is a huge trigger for me because the person asking knows they didn’t do it or they wouldn’t be asking. I just don’t understand why they can’t just come out and ask if I did whatever they are inquiring about. To use the ‘we’ seems condescending to me, almost superior in a way.…

Idioms are commonly defined as expressions that take on their own meaning that cannot be understood outside of the meanings of the individual words. “For example, there is a figurative extension for the sign BLUE, which means ‘to feel blue.’ In English the word ‘blue’ without any change in form can be used to mean ‘blue in color’ and ‘depressed’ or ‘sad’; but in ASL the figurative extension of BLUE is made with the same handshape and the same location but with a change in quality of movement. BLUE, the color sign, has a repeated twist of the wrist; BLUE, the derivative sign, has a single slow arcing movement” (Bellugi 21).…

As an educator, it is important to teach children the tools needed to be successful in school, the community, and the future. Specifically, an elementary school teacher must focus on teaching vocabulary since it is one of the building blocks of learning to read, write, and speak.
