Accutane is a prescription medication used for treating severe acne. Being a teenager is hard enough without having to deal with the embarrassing issues that come with acne. Many people can suffer from acne. It affects teenagers and sometimes adults as well. Some cases are very severe and can even result in scarring. The scarring is usually a permanent disfigurement that can follow a teenager into adulthood. In most cases peoples’ acne is not very bad. People with mild acne cases usually seek treatment from over the counter topical crèmes or gels. Some people resort to using a low grade prescription antibiotic to keep their acne under control. As with other prescriptions, Isotretinoin comes with its share of risks and has many possible side effects. “Accutane, also known generically as Isotretinoin, can cause a whole host of serious problems that are far worse than having acne” (Huff). Roche, a French company that first developed Accutane, started prescribing the drug during the 1970’s. They did not know the severity of the side effects until later. “Roche Pharmaceuticals, also called Hoffman La-Roche, was aware before it even put the acne drug Accutane on the market that the acne medication could cause harmful side effects” (Westbrook). Accutane has the potential to produce some unpleasant side effects. “Just like any medicine, Accutane (Isotretinoin) can cause side effects” (Monson). Accutane has a reputation for producing some bad side effects. Some of the more common side effects include symptoms such as dry cracked lips, occasional severe nose bleeds, mild rashes, skin peeling, dry skin, and headaches. “However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems” (Monson). As uncomfortable and inconvenient as some of these symptoms appear, none of them are life threatening and all go away shortly after the medication usage is discontinued.
However, Accutane also has a list of many potential side effects. Accutane is a teratogen. Since Accutane is a teratogen, this basically means that it is highly likely to cause birth defects. Women are advised to not get
